Why entertainment is becoming a competitive advantage for automakers

Premium in-car entertainment is no longer just a “nice-to-have” feature; it is rapidly becoming a critical competitive differentiator for automakers. As vehicles become increasingly connected and software-defined, the quality of the in-cabin experience is directly influencing brand perception, customer loyalty, and even vehicle purchasing decisions.

This strategic shift was the resounding consensus at the recent DATAxis Conference ahead of the Paris Motor Show, where industry leaders gathered to discuss the future of the connected vehicle. For Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), the mandate is clear: to win the future of mobility, they must elevate the entertainment experience.

The OEM imperative: owning the digital experience

Automakers today face a pivotal choice: retain control over their digital customer experience or cede the dashboard entirely to smartphone ecosystems like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Tom Adams, who represented Stingray on the panel at DATAxis, highlighted why OEMs must take ownership of this space. “The transition to software-defined vehicles means that high-quality entertainment is evolving into a core component of the overall vehicle experience,” Adams noted. “Automakers need to retain control over their digital customer journey rather than leaving it entirely to third-party smartphone ecosystems. By integrating native, premium content, OEMs can protect their brand identity while unlocking new, long-term relationships with their drivers.”

Quality over quantity: the end of the “app shelf”

A recurring theme across the panels in Paris was that the future of in-car media is not about offering the largest number of apps. Customers do not want a cluttered “shelf of icons” on their dashboard. Instead, success relies on delivering relevant, engaging, and seamlessly integrated entertainment experiences.

As the volume of available content grows, discoverability is becoming a major hurdle. The panels highlighted that personalization, intelligent recommendations, and voice interaction (powered by AI) will become increasingly essential. These technologies will help users find the right content at the exact right moment, removing friction and minimizing driver distraction.

Stingray’s strategic vision: a comprehensive portfolio

Stingray’s automotive strategy is built to support this exact OEM mandate. Rather than offering a fragmented, one-size-fits-all app, Stingray provides automakers with a comprehensive, native entertainment portfolio spanning premium music, interactive karaoke, global radio, and millions of podcasts.

Crucially, Stingray pairs this robust content offering with highly flexible commercial models. Whether an automaker is looking for ad-supported integrations, direct licensing, or revenue-sharing agreements, Stingray provides the infrastructure for OEMs to tailor the cabin experience on their own terms—and monetize it accordingly. Recent collaborations include the integration of Stingray Music and Stingray Karaoke into Mercedes-Benz vehicles, bringing premium in-car entertainment to a brand synonymous with automotive luxury.

Safety meets entertainment: the NIO benchmark

When OEMs integrate native entertainment, they face far stricter quality and safety expectations than mobile app developers. This commitment to safety and OEM brand protection was explicitly highlighted during the conference by Sebastian Salera, Head of the European Product Experience Department at NIO.

Discussing how to balance rich entertainment with driver safety, Salera pointed directly to Stingray as a benchmark for success. “We integrated third-party applications from, for example, Stingray,” Salera explained to the panel. “They essentially took an SDK from us and prevented our users from using the application’s scrolling lyrics when the car is in motion… Because you need to pay attention to the road. But when that happens, you can scan a QR code that is displayed on the center display, and then the passengers can follow the lyrics on their smartphone.”

This specific use case perfectly encapsulates the future of in-car media. By prioritizing native integration, Stingray provides highly engaging entertainment that turns the car into a social space, while utilizing innovative companion technology to ensure the driver remains entirely focused on the road.

The road ahead

The transition of the car into a connected media environment is happening now. Automakers can no longer afford to treat infotainment as an afterthought. By partnering with content providers like Stingray who offer high-quality, brand-safe, and comprehensive media portfolios, OEMs can transform their dashboards into a true competitive advantage.
